I had the opportunity to check out the artwork of self-taught Artist Francis "F.A." Sonnie this weekend. He is based in Sierra Leone, but that does not stop the international travels of his collection of village paintings. More than 25 of his lively acrylic on canvass paintings are here in North Carolina for an exhibit being held at The Palace International (1104 Broad Street Durham, NC 27705) November 4, 2013 through January 6, 2014. There are a variety of sizes to choose from and donations will benefit Africa Yes!, a nonprofit funding women and community projects in Gbeworbu, Sierra Leone. The slideshow below shows a peek of some of the art. Visit it in person during The Palace International's regular business hours (closed on Mondays) or feel free to join the Opening Reception in a few weeks: Monday, Dec. 2nd, 5:30-7:30p.m. Also, here's an EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEAK of what's to come at The Palace... Stay tuned for more information on the Grand Opening of a Boutique selling clothing, accessories, and decor ALL from West Africa.

In 2003, while I was working as part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leone Mr. Sonnie was living, and painting in the town of Zimmi near the Liberian border. I had the good fortune to be based there and buy 4 of his works, then brought them back to Canada where they proudly hang in my collection. I am glad I found this article online to see that he is continuing to paint and doing well!

Thank you çy for the kind words! If it's not to forward, may I ask what village were you born in as I travelled extensively in that region for my work? In fact, I'm hoping to get back to Sierra Leone soon in my new NGO job working to eradicate the use of child soldiers. I'm still buying and collecting art too and was lucky enough to buy a Chagall on my last visit to New Orleans! Leave a Reply. |
