As excited as I've been about designing lately, I often wonder if I'm going about it right. Should I be taking classes or pursuing my Masters in Art & Design? While battling these thoughts, I spend my free time designing posters and art work with hopes of landing my first winning design via Creative Allies. My work there has been featured for the third time in a row in their Editors' Picks Galleries [1 2 3]. Yay! I get excited with each notification until I find out that I am not the contest winner. Maybe I will be luckier next time, I think.. Right? Wrong.
Although I hold mixed feelings about these contests, there are many professional designers that are totally against this practice. I understand because I don't believe amateur designers or any designer should bid their hard work and receive little or no pay. The short video below summarizes the issues with this practice, known as spec work, and leaves me to think that this month will mark another turning point in how I handle my art and design work. What are your thoughts? Is spec work so bad?
I'm an amateur for now, but I'm totally in love with Adobe Illustrator -and have yet to work on a full project in PhotoShop. However, I will try that out soon. I recently downloaded the trial of Adobe Creative Suite 5 when I found out I could get the newest software through my place of employment. Bomb.com.
I am loving the process of sketching, scanning, inking/vectorizing and then coloring. I've gotten to do a few logos and designs for people so far and successfully completed them, but I really want to focus on getting these programs down. I've been getting inquiries and would like to revamp www.cynelsa.com; and need to figure out the best way to set up my page to be contacted, receive payments, and showcase my portfolio all at once.
The start of a new year brings reason to log on for an update on what's been going on. Happy New Year to everyone! My last post was in October, so there is much to mention. I'll briefly discuss the end of my 2012 and then move on to what I'm currently working on.
This is my very first blog post. I want to talk about the eventful week and weekend I had, which includes my first of many things. This list includes my artist grant proposal submission, entering a design contest successfully, and my first meet ups with new friends.
